Twined

Twined depicts three epitomized figures, each formed by elements and symbolism embleming female and lesbian identity. This work responds to the lesbian culture trending in China in the recent few years, which involves categorizing individuals into “T”, “P” and “H” roles in their community. Originally representing appearance characteristics and sexual roles, these categories have expanded to encompass broader implications. They not only assign distinct personalities, responsibilities, and roles within the relationship, but also derive detailed classifications to specify particular traits, such as age, temperament and dressing styles. Although used in the narration of lesbian relationships, these categories actually recreate conventional heterosexual connections and return to patriarchal paradigms. Twined communicates the tangled and misleading messages that these categories convey, shedding light on restraints they are imposing on the cognition of themselves and relationships for the lesbian community and, by extension, the broader queer community.
